The Demetz #178 Pietà Bust is a deeply moving interpretation of one of the most powerful scenes in Christian sacred art: the Blessed Virgin Mary mourning and holding the body of Christ after His removal from the Cross.
Rather than depicting the entire traditional Pietà composition, this sculptural bust concentrates attention on the faces of Jesus and Mary, creating an intimate and expressive portrayal of sorrow, compassion, and maternal love. Mary's gaze rests upon Christ, making the piece especially appropriate for prayer, meditation, and contemplation of the Passion.
Measuring approximately 32" x 22", the Demetz #178 has substantial presence while remaining suitable for placement on a pedestal, shrine, devotional altar, side chapel, reconciliation area, memorial space, or other prominent location within a church.
Each piece is made to order in Italy by Demetz Art Studio, whose ecclesiastical artwork is produced by skilled artists and craftsmen in Val Gardena, Italy. Because each sculpture is individually finished, slight variations in color, texture, and detailing are part of the character of the finished work.

- Made from a mixture of fiberglass and resin, these statues are lightweight, weather resistant and easy to maintain. Thanks to these characteristics it makes them a popular choice for both, indoor and outdoor settings.
- Fiberglass statues in a monotone bronze, aluminum, terracotta or white marble finish are made using a special technique that lets them withstand the outdoor elements and makes them suitable for outdoor display.
- Colored fiberglass statues, instead, cannot be guaranteed for outdoor use. They are hand painted with oil colors using the same traditional technique as with wood carvings. Any kind of colors applied to a fiberglass statue will fade when kept outdoors.
The Demetz #178 Pietà Bust is crafted in fiberglass and is available in a wide selection of hand-applied finishes, allowing the sculpture to be coordinated with the architecture, furnishings, and overall character of the church or devotional space.
Available finishes include:
- Full Color
- Statuary Bronze (Shown)
- Antique Bronze
- Antique Silver
- White Marble
- Light Grey
- Terracotta (Shown)
Each finish is individually applied by Demetz artisans, so slight variations in tone and appearance are natural and help give each sculpture its own character.
The White Marble and Light Grey finishes provide a classical stone-like appearance, while Statuary Bronze, Antique Bronze, and Antique Silver offer the look of traditional metal sculpture without the weight and cost of cast bronze. Terracotta provides a warm, Old World appearance, while Full Color offers the most lifelike and traditional devotional presentation.
A Powerful Image of the Passion
The Pietà has remained one of the Church's most enduring devotional images because it brings together the sacrifice of Christ and the sorrow of His Blessed Mother.
By focusing closely on the figures of Jesus and Mary, the Demetz #178 creates an especially intimate devotional image. It is well suited for Lenten and Holy Week environments, permanent Marian shrines, memorial areas, side chapels, or any space intended for quiet prayer and reflection.
